SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS: A Massachusetts girl who was critically wounded in a suspected murder-suicide has succumbed to her injuries days after the shooting in Springfield.
According to the Hampden District Attorney's Office, the victim who was identified by her mother's post as Aubrianna Lynn was shot on Monday, August 16, by their neighbor Victor Nieves, reported People.
Who was Aubrianna Lynn?
Aubrianna Lynn was shot and injured by her neighbor who forcibly entered their apartment and opened fire at the occupants, including three children, 52-year-old Kim Fairbanks, and their dog.
The 34-year-old man then turned the gun on himself. Fairbanks was Aubrianna's grandmother who had been babysitting the three children when the tragic shooting took place.
Days after being treated for the critical injuries in the horrifying shooting, Lynn died on Thursday, August 17.
Aubrianna Lynn's mother mourns her death
Announcing the death of Lynn, her grieving mother Stephanie Corteua shared numerous pictures of the 10-year-old on Facebook.
"At 12.56 pm, my princess Aubrianna Lynn's heart stopped beating. It was peaceful, she was not in any pain. She was surrounded by her family. My whole heart has been completely ripped out of my chest," she wrote alongside the pictures.
Following the suspected murder-suicide incident, the young child who was in critical condition was airlifted to Boston Children's Hospital.
What led to the Springfield shooting?
The motive behind the killings has not yet been disclosed by the investigators.
According to the district attorney's office, the 52-year-old woman's 12-year-old granddaughter who was shot in the attack was listed as stable at a hospital in Springfield.
Fairbank's third grandchild, a 5-year-old boy was unharmed in the shooting. However, their family dog was fatally shot.
Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno shared an emotional statement to NBC10 where he called the 10-year-old child an "angel."
"As a father of two daughters, there are no words to express my feelings about this tragic loss of life," he wrote.
"A brave and bright angel, 10-year-old Aubrianna Lynn, has been taken away all too soon from her family. Let her legacy be a clarion call to all of us to redouble our efforts in her memory to do everything we can to end these senseless acts of violence," Sarno stated.
In the wake of the tragic incident, a GoFundMe has been organized to help the family meet funeral expenses and medical costs.
"Kim, wife, daughter, mother, grandmother, and friend, was tragically stolen from her family and friends," read the GoFundMe’s organizer Natasha Lopez's statement.
"Her life was taken while babysitting her three beloved grandchildren," she added. As of Friday, the GoFundMe has raised over $33,610.
