The U.S. Department of Justice released findings from its two-year investigation of the Minneapolis Police Department on Friday, concluding that the department had a pattern or practice of using excessive force and discriminating against Black people.
The investigation was launched in April 2021 after a white former police officer, Derek Chauvin, was convicted of murdering George Floyd, a Black man, by kneeling on Floyd's neck for more than nine minutes after he had been handcuffed.
