A merciless arsonist set fire to a German cafe while people slept unsuspectingly in apartments above. Shocking CCTV video footage shows the fire started after a man was seen dousing the room with what seems to be petrol from a bottle on 3 April. Hood-wearing thugs then ignite the fluid and flames quickly engulf the cafe, located in Bad Endorf, a village in Bavaria. Footage from outdoor security cameras, released by police on 9 October, shows the arsonist fleeing through a car park with an accomplice. Police have put up a €5,000 reward for information leading to the conviction of the pair for attempted murder and arson. Soldiers and firefighters were battling to control a new wildfire on Spain’s Tenerife island that has forced some 3,000 people to leave their homes for safety. Footage shows smoke rising above buildings as the fire rages in the forest nearby on Thursday 5 October. The blaze, which started Wednesday, is centred on the towns of Santa Ursula and La Orotava in the mountainous northeast of the island, away from the main tourist areas in Tenerife’s southwest. The same area suffered one of the island’s worst wildfires in decades in August when 14,000 hectares of pine forest and scrubland were burnt and some 12,000 residents evacuated over several weeks.

Ukraine has reportedly developed a real-life “invisibility cloak” that can hide soldiers from Russian thermal cameras thanks to its unique properties that block heat signature radiation. The images show two men standing next to each other, with a third, on the left, barely visible at all thanks to the new cloak. Mykhailo Fedorov, minister of digital transformation of Ukraine, shared the footage on Wednesday 4 October. “Have you ever read about invisibility cloaks in fairy tales? The four towers on Barcelona’s Sagrada Familia have been completed more than 140 years after the first stone was laid. Each represents one of the four evangelists, and the final sculptural pieces have now been set in place. Matthew is an angel and John an eagle joining Mark and Luke, in the forms of a lion and an ox. A celebratory Mass will be held once the scaffolding on the church is removed, revealing Antonio Gaudi’s masterpiece. With the competition of the sculptures, work will now focus on the final and tallest tower, dedicated to Jesus. Construction on the church is expected to be finished by 2026. Social network X, formerly known as Twitter, is the biggest source of fake news according to a top EU official. X is “the platform with the largest ratio of mis- or disinformation posts,” European Commission Vice President Vera Jourova said. She urged the platform’s owner, Elon Musk, to comply with the bloc’s laws aimed at combating disinformation. The European Commission, the EU’s executive arm, released a study of six online platforms in Poland, Slovakia and Spain that found Twitter had the highest prevalence of disinformation and biggest ratio of disinformation actors.

Explosions from a Russian drone attack on the Ukrainian region of Odesa were captured from a ferry on the Danube River. Romanian Border Police said in a statement on Tuesday 26 September that traffic through the Danube crossing in Isaccea, Tulcea County, has been closed due to the attacks on the Ukrainian side. A video posted online by a person who was crossing the river showed explosions in Ukraine that could be seen from across the border. The statement from Romanian Border Police said that traffic was being redirected through Galati, a town situated on the Danube upstream from Isaccea.

The Kosovar government has released drone video showing a group of Serbian gunmen storming an Orthodox monastery in Kosovo on Sunday, 24 September. Around 30 masked men fled to the monastery after opening fire on police near the village of Banjska in northern Kosovo, killing one officer and injuring another. The stand-off ended when most of the assailants escaped on foot under cover of darkness on Sunday evening. Three of the gunmen were shot and killed by Kosovar police.

Volodymyr Zelensky met with Joe Biden at the White House on Thursday 21 September. The president of Ukraine arrived alongside First Lady Olena Zelenska and was seen shaking hands with Mr Biden and Jill Biden, First Lady of the United States. Mr Zelensky, who earlier visited Capitol Hill and the Pentagon, capped his visit to Washington with an Oval Office meeting. He said he felt “trust” between himself and top American officials and expressed gratitude for the defence support that has allowed his armed forces to “combat Russian terror”. Volodymyr Zelensky said he had a “very strong dialogue” with senators after his behind-closed-doors meeting on Capitol Hill on Thursday 21 September. The president of Ukraine made a trip to Washington DC this week to shore up US support for his nation. During his visit, Mr Zelensky met with the entire Senate, but only a select few House leaders attended a meeting on the other side of Capitol Hill. “We spoke about support, about the situation on the battlefield, about our class. I can’t share with you all the details, but I think we had a very strong dialogue with senators,” he told reporters.

A Russian drone attack over the city of Lviv, Ukraine, early on Tuesday 19 September heavily damaged a warehouse facility and injured a 26-year-old man, according to the regional governor. Maksym Kozytsky reported that 15 out of 18 drones were intercepted. Footage from the ground shows flames raging from a warehouse, as firefighters battle to control the blaze. The state emergency service said the fire, caused by the drone attack, has reached 9,450 square meters. Giorgia Meloni welcomed Ursula von der Leyen to Lampedusa on Sunday, 17 September, after thousands of migrants arrived on the Italian island this week. The European Commission President held talks with the Italian prime minister after Ms Meloni said Italy is being placed under "unsustainable pressure". Ms Von der Leyen's has pledged to provide help for Italy to cope with the spike in arrivals as part of a 10-point plan. "Irregular migration is a European challenge and it needs a European answer, so we are in this together," Ms Von der Leyen said.

Ukraine released footage on Saturday (16 September) of troops moving through a war-ravaged settlement in the Donetsk Oblast after Kyiv announced its recapture. Video published by Ukraine’s 3rd Assault Brigade showed troops moving through rubble in Andriivka, 6 miles (10km) south of the Russian-occupied city of Bakhmut after three months of intense fighting. The clip also shows soldiers taking cover behind a broken wall amid mortar fire. It comes after Ukraine announced a tactical victory in the southern Zaporizhzhia region, taking back the village of Robotyne in late August.
