MOROCCO, CANADA: Twitch sparked an uproar recently when it disclosed details about new branded content restrictions that limited the types of "burned-in" commercials. After the new policy was announced, streamer Pokimane expressed her views regarding OnlyFans-style platforms, saying they are better for content creators.
Many famous personalities, including Asmongold, threatened to leave Twitch for competing platforms like Kick and Rumble and called for a boycott of the Amazon-owned network amid the criticism. Even after Twitch issued an apology, it faced criticism - and Pokimane joined in again, pushing streamers to make changes in order to receive adequate pay for their work.
'Content creation is becoming so saturated'
Pokimane stated on her own Twitter account that content creation was becoming "saturated," with a plethora of streaming possibilities and far too many options. Creators can also use Kick, YouTube, TikTok, and even Facebook if they're feeling particularly masochistic.
She then went on to give numerous examples, including OnlyFans, Patreon, and consumer products, emphasizing how these platforms enable creators to earn significantly more money. Nonetheless, despite popular demand, Poki has stated that she would not be joining OnlyFans.
She wrote, “I feel like because content creation is becoming so saturated + we often have trouble relying on the platforms we use, the future is direct to consumer paid content (patreon, onlypans, consumer goods, etc)." She continued, "Cut out the middle man + get proper compensation for what you make/do!"
'Platforms make finding new things easier'
Pokimane's followers reacted positively to her statement on Twitter. One wrote, "I dunno. Platforms make finding new things easier. They make it possible to monetize without requiring direct payment from consumers (a big issue). And they don't require much infrastructure form creators."
This would not, however, imply abandoning social media, which plays an important role in discoverability. Pokimane replied, "Social media platforms will obviously always be used, but i think people will start looking at them as tools to gain exposure instead of being the way to make money."
Another user reacted by supporting Pokimane's statement, "I could not agree more with this… i genuinely believe there’s a future where streamers move to platforms like OF/Fansly where viewer retention will be much easier than these brand new streaming platforms. Just hope streamers and adult creators will be able to co-exist!!"
