POTOMAC, MARYLAND: Mia and Gordon Thornton have separated after 11 years of marriage. Although the estranged couple has not officially revealed the reason for divorce, their marriage had a series of financial and personal struggles.
However, according to TMZ, Gordon didn't know about their separation until he received the divorce papers. The outlet reported that Gordon "thought everything was fine and dandy until he got served".
Sources close to Gordon told the outlet that he was handed court documents on Mia's behalf back in mid-August which revealed her desire for legal separation.
The source revealed that the move completely blindsided Gordon and that he had no clue it was coming.
Notably, Mia appeared to show everything between the couple was normal until she dropped the divorce bomb. She shared a series of photos with Gordon and even called him a positive influence on their children.
Meanwhile, the source told the outlet that Gordon was irritated by Mia's move and he hasn't even signed the papers yet. Mia and Gordon had faced multiple financial struggles in recent years.
The pair run a chain of chiropractic clinics called The Joint Chiropractic, though last October, Mia accused Gordon's brothers of having "revoked his access to the company bank account" while the two were "out of the country."
Mia then revealed in January that the pair had to move out of their home due to "unforeseen circumstances." She explained at the 'RHOP' Season 7 reunion in February that she and Gordon "are literally living off our savings" and were now living in a penthouse rental in North Bethesda, having given up previous rental properties they owned.
Mia Thornton announces separation from Gordon
Mia Thornton recently announced that she and Gordon are getting a divorce. The 'RHOP' star told People, "Like all marriages, ours has had its ups and downs."
She added, "At this time, Gordon and I are separated, but my family is my number one priority, and I am committed to doing whatever it takes to make sure we are okay."
Mia further noted, "We ask that you respect our privacy and give us the time and space to figure things out."
How did Mia Thornton and Gordon meet?
In an episode of the Bravo show 'RHOP', Gordon and Mia Thornton revealed they met at a "strip club" during a newlyweds game with the other 'RHOP' couples. However, in an interview with E! News, Mia shared details about their meeting.
Mia said, "The reason why we became friends is because we partnered and served on the same board for a non-profit organization to raise money for Haiti." She further revealed that they were raising money for the charity.
How many children do Mia Thornton and Gordon have?
Mia and Gordon Thornton exchanged vows in March 2012 after initially meeting in 2003. They have two children — son Jeremiah Carter, 8, and daughter Juliana, 6.
Both Mia and Gordon also have one child from previous relationships. They are also grandparents of four grandchildren.
