COLLETOWN COUNTY, SOUTH CAROLINA: Detective Sgt Daniel Greene, a key figure in the Alex Murdaugh double murder investigation, was involved in a devastating car crash that claimed the life of his three-year-old daughter, Carter. The Colleton County Sheriff's Office announced the heartbreaking news with "great sorrow," revealing that the detective was driving his county-issued SUV when it veered off the road and slammed into a tree. Despite receiving immediate medical attention, Carter was pronounced dead at the Medical University of South Carolina.
Detective Greene was off-duty during the tragic single-vehicle crash which occurred around 11.30 am on Sunday, July 30. Alongside Greene, his wife, Jennifer, and another child were also injured and transported to the hospital. Thankfully, their injuries were severe but not life-threatening, according to the Colleton County Sheriff's Office.

Carter was the three-year-old daughter of Detective Greene and his previous partner, Ashley Taylor. The toddler's mother posted a heartfelt tribute, which read, "My beautiful, sweet baby girl. My perfect Angel. I miss you so so much. I’ll never understand why you had to leave us, or how we’re supposed to live this life without you. I am so lost without you and I am so angry. This will never make sense to me. You were taken from me way too soon. God knows I need you here. I just wish I could hear you say “I love you more” one more time, and give you all the bear hugs in the world. I don’t know a world without you. You are the most beautiful miracle God could have ever given me, the absolute best thing that has ever been mine. Mama loves you more, princess."

Detective Greene is a seasoned law enforcement officer with extensive experience in road patrol and detective work. On June 7, 2021, he was among the first local officers to respond to the tragic shooting deaths of Maggie and Paul Murdaugh at their rural estate in Colleton County, Moselle. He played a crucial role in the investigation and testified during the six-week trial in Walterboro in February and March, leading to the Murdaugh's conviction for both murders.
