LONG ISLAND, NEW YORK: One of Rex Heuermann's neighbors has come forward to recount a chilling encounter where the Gilgo Beach murders suspect was caught rambling about "the girls." The Manhattan architect, 59, is currently behind bars on charges related to the murders of three sex workers, whose bodies were found on an isolated Long Island beach in December 2010.
Heuermann is facing counts of first-degree murder and second-degree murder for allegedly killing Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, and Amber Costello. He is also the prime suspect in the murder of Maureen Brainard-Barnes, but authorities haven’t charged him in the case due to a lack of phone data. While the architect has pleaded not guilty to the charges, his arrest has sent shockwaves through his quiet Long Island neighborhood. One of Heuermann’s neighbors, who wishes to remain anonymous, recently told Daily Mail that the suspect "was always tinkering in the garage or outside and he seemed very intimidating."
Who is Jimmy Mack?
Another neighbor named Jimmy Mack, who lives a couple of blocks away from Heuermann's "dungeon-like" home, also recalled a terrifying encounter with the suspect outside his Long Island home. The 51-year-old Mack is a trucking company owner and lives in Massapequa Park with his wife and three stepchildren. Mack told DailyMail that on March 2, he was smoking a cigarette on his porch at around 10 pm when he overheard Heuermann talking to someone. "I'm sitting on my porch and he doesn't see me but I hear him saying 'Oh here we are again… I told them ...I told those girls once already ... now you guys are going to understand,’" he recounted.
Mack claimed that Heuermann, who was left startled after noticing him, appeared intoxicated and continued to babble to himself before standing at the end of his driveway. "Bro are you talking to my house?" Mack asked the alleged serial killer. He replied, "Are you the a**hole that owns this car? I warned them last time and now they are going to see." He then aggressively said that he would return in 15 minutes to slash his tires. Mack then chased Heurmann away from his driveway and asked him, "What did you say about the girls ... are you talking about my wife and daughter?" When things got heated, the neighbor threatened Heurmann, saying, "I'll never f***ing see you again unless we handle our business now."
‘Everybody was nervous’
Then Mack followed the alleged murderer in his car, recalling that he sensed "something ain't right. I need to know where this guy lives." He then recalled seeing Heuermann leap over the fence of his neighbor and cover his face as he ran away. He also revealed that he told his friends and family that "if something happens to this house or anything, it's this guy." He added, "That's how much I knew that there was something wrong with this." "Who knows if he would have come back with a gun?" Mack asked, adding, "He said fifteen minutes and that's about how long it would have taken him to get back to my house."
"I lost five nights of sleep. I was waiting for this guy to come back. I was on my porch every night. Even my wife lost sleep. Everybody was nervous. I am not trying to sound like a tough guy but when someone threatens my family," Mack continued. He also informed his neighbors about the altercation and gave them a heads-up about the man's residence. "I told everyone on the block they need to watch out... my gut was just telling me something was wrong ...it was more than a normal confrontation," Mack said. Investigators are currently examining Heurmann’s residence as they believe that at least one of the Gilgo Beach victims was killed there.
