CULVER CITY, CALIFORNIA: 'Jeopardy!' has once again garnered attention from viewers because of a particular contestant. For the episode broadcast on July 5, Anji Nyquist became the talk of the game show because of her accent.
The contestant was not exactly a fan favorite and has been mocked by fans for her way of speaking. However, Anji's performance on 'Jeopardy!' shocked everyone until the very end as she managed to turn the tables around with her trivia skills.
Who is Anji Nyquist?
Nyquist made her 'Jeopardy!' debut on the episode that was telecasted on Wednesday alongside the previous champion Kate Campolieta, a corporate communications specialist, and the high school English teacher Aubrey Gilleran. Anji is a social media coordinator from Minneapolis, Minnesota where she also acquired her high school diploma and Bachelor's. Nyquist got her degree in Media Studies and Communication from Minnesota State University, Mankato back in 2012.
Nyquist also previously gained experience as a home mortgage loan processor at Wells Fargo, a multinational financial services company. She held the same position previously at Military Family Home Loans and Edward Jones Mortgage as well. She is not active on any social media platforms but has a Twitter account that she recently went private on. It seems that the Minnesota Wolves are her favorite basketball team according to her bio.
Anji Nyquist becomes a highlight on 'Jeopardy!'
It was not how Nyquist played but rather how she spoke that provoked the game fans to take to Twitter to mock her accent. Some of them felt that her way of speaking resembled that of the infamous 'valley girls' who speak with a higher pitch.
Nyquist couldn't live up to the valley girl stereotype as went on to do a major end-minute turnaround in the game. Gilleran was in the lead with $11.2K while previous 'Jeopardy!' champ Campolieta fell second on the podium with $6.9K. Nyquist was last, with a figure of $4.8K. It was the Final Jeopardy round that allowed Nyquist to make a comeback as she was the only one with a correct answer while the other two wagered huge amounts with wrong answers. She is the current 'Jeopardy!' champion and will be making a return in the next episode.
