Was Rex Heuermann building coffins? Neighbor of alleged Gilgo Beach killer says suspect was a 'quiet' woodworker

LONG ISLAND, NEW YORK: Gilgo Beach murder suspect Rex Heuermann's neighbor said he was a "very quiet" woodworker. For 22 years, the neighbor who did not reveal their name lived at Massapequa Park, New York. "He did a lot of woodworking and stuff in his garage and in his... his driveway," he said.

Explaining Heuermann's shift to the house next door, the neighbor said the suspect who kept to himself gave him a "creepy" vibe" and "never said two words to me." The neighbor shared that despite his behavior, he was shocked to learn of Heuermann's arrest in connection to the grisly killings of three women, according to People.

Was Rex Heuermann building coffins?

The neighbor who spoke of Heuermann's woodworking said, "I hope he wasn't building coffins." The two never acknowledged each other though they saw each other at the station. "It came down to it that when we first moved here, he made his mark. He had no interest in being [in] any kind of relations, so I said that's it. If I saw him at the train station, I didn't acknowledge him at all. He didn't acknowledge me," said the neighbor.

"It's giving Massapequa Park people a really bad name. But I got to tell you, this is one of the best communities to live in. I mean, we got a great school system," the neighbor said of the Gilgo Beach murder case adding he "can't believe" it. He later opined that it was "very unfair" that such gruesome crimes put a "big schmear" on their community.

Heuermann pleaded not guilty to murder charges

Heuermann who runs the New York-based company 'RH Consultants and Associates' is an architect. The alleged killer was arrested on Friday in connection to the death of three women who were reported missing between 2007 and 2010. All the victims were reportedly sex workers who were contacted from the number available on Craigslist Internet site. They were contacted using throw-away phones so the murderer was not traced by investigators.

The 59-year-old pleaded not guilty to three counts of murder in the first degree and three counts of murder in the second degree of the killings of Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, and Amber Costello. If convicted of the charges, Heuermann will face life in prison without parole. He is also considered the prime suspect in the death of another victim of the so-called 'Gilgo Four' who was identified as Maureen Brainard-Barnes.
