LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Pop diva Rina Sawayama seemed to make a dig at her labelmate at Dirty Hit Records, who is also the lead singer of 'The 1975', Matty Healy, during her set at Glastonbury on Saturday, June 24. While the 32-year-old so-called musical chameleon didn't mention Matty's name, she introduced the song 'STFU!' by saying, "I wrote this next song because I was sick and tired of microaggressions. So, tonight, this song goes out to a white man who watches [pornography series] Ghetto Gaggers and mocks Asian people on a podcast. He also owns my masters. I’ve had enough," as per The Guardian.
In February, Healy took part in 'The Adam Friedland Show' and laughed as the hosts made fun of the rapper Ice Spice and her accent and origin, which were misidentified as Chinese, Hawaiian, and Inuit. In another segment, 'The 1975' lead singer also acknowledged watching the racially charged pornographic series that Sawayama referred to, stating that it "brutalized" women.
Sawayama is signed to Dirty Hit, a record label founded by the 1975's manager Jamie Oborne that also releases the band's songs. Between December 2018 and April 2023, Healy served as a director of the company. In the video that is being circulated on Twitter, Rina can be seen quickly switching to performing with fervor as the audience began to erupt. Fans were happy that Sawayama was finally standing up for herself, with one reposting the video and tweeting, "RINA SAWAYAMA CALLING OUT MATTY HEALY LET'S GOO."
'She Gagged him so bad help'
Many others on Twitter also commended the action-movie hero. "Im so proud of her," tweeted a fan. A second fan wrote, "This f**king queen." Some questioned Rina's previous lack of response with one writing, "I don’t understand why she waited so long to call him out. She knew about his comments months ago. Why now?" "Rina Sawayama is 100 million times braver than all the outlets that wouldn’t cover this and people who wouldn’t acknowledge this," wrote one person. "Hope she gets to own her masters someday. She’s so talented and underrated." Another user noted, "I might start listening to Rina's music now that I know Matty Healy is profiting off of her masters." "Great to see an artist calling out a gatekeeper for blatant racism. More power to you, @rinasawayama," claimed another user. One fan said, "SHE GAGGED HIM SOOOO BADDDD HELPP." "Oh she just ended that showerless man," said a fan.
