JACKSON, MISSISSIPPI: The Jackson Police Department said in a press release that they have arrested the 23-year-old Jazmyn Johnson who kidnapped her 10-month-baby from a home on 3700 block of Jayne Avenue in Jackson, Mississippi.
Investigations revealed that Johnson and three other men, who were wearing masks, kicked the back door in, robbed the residents, killed a 42-year-old man inside the home before taking the 10-month-old baby at gunpoint, as reported by People.
According to the release, when police arrived at the scene on Wednesday night at around 9.30 pm, on August 30, they discovered the dead man, who had been shot multiple times, and learned that the child was missing. Police did not identify the man or the child.
Where was Jazmyn Johnson arrested?
According to 16 WAPT News, Jackson police detectives found Johnson at a gas station in the 2100 block of Lynch Street within an hour of the crime.
Capt. Julian Lonie said that the baby was safely recovered, and Johnson was arrested. The other three suspects involved in the deadly home invasion remain on the run.
At the time of the incident, the police did not know that Johnson was the baby's mother. It was later revealed in municipal court on Thursday afternoon, August 31, that Johnson is the birth mother of the baby, as reported by WLBT
It was also revealed to the court that the 42-year-old man who was shot and killed was the boyfriend of Johnson’s mother and had full custody of the child. The baby's grandmother was also at the residence during the violent break-in.
The judge set no bond for Johnson’s capital murder charge, and a $1.1 million bond for other felony charges, including kidnapping.
Jackson neighborhood grapples with crime
Despite the fact that this incident does not appear to be random, neighbors report that violent crimes are not uncommon in the area.
Dee Patrick, whose mother lives in the area, said, "This brings up a lot of old memories, because I was broken into twice when I stayed here. And there was this woman behind the house that was murdered while I was here by myself. I'm tired."
What are the charges against Jazmyn Johnson?
Johnson was charged with capital murder, armed robbery of an individual, residential burglary, and kidnapping. It is unclear whether she has entered a plea or retained an attorney. Additional charges and arrests are "on the way," according to police.
"More charges and additional arrest are forthcoming for the other suspects," police said in a statement.
