LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Jada Pinkett Smith has come under fire for her comments about the late rapper Tupac Shakur.
In a recent interview, the talk-show host, 52, claimed that the 'All Eyez on Me' hitmaker had alopecia, a condition that causes hair loss.
Pinkett Smith’s assertion has ignited a storm of disapproval on social media platforms, with many scrutinizing the relevance and timing of her revelation.
Detractors contend that if Tupac was truly distressed by his condition, as Pinkett Smith implies, it was not suitable for her to mention it so many years after his demise.
One social media user questioned, "If he was uncomfortable with it, why bring it up now?" This comment echoed the opinions of many others who believe the actress is taking advantage of Tupac's reputation for her own gain.
Did Tupac and Jada Pinkett Smith ever date?
Jada Pinkett Smith and Tupac Shakur reportedly shared a close, yet non-romantic bond.
Their friendship, which began during their teenage years at the Baltimore School for the Arts in Maryland in the mid-'80s, was marked by deep mutual affection.
However, there was no romantic spark between them. Pinkett Smith revealed in an interview that they once attempted a kiss, but found it to be "disgusting."
What did Jada Pinkett Smith reveal about Tupac?
Pinkett Smith, who was diagnosed with the autoimmune disorder alopecia in 2018, has been a vocal advocate for raising awareness about the condition that leads to unpredictable hair loss.
However, she recently stated that she doesn’t believe Tupac ever publicly discussed his own experiences with the condition.
The actress revealed to People that Tupac started showing symptoms around 1991, following his arrest for jaywalking by the Oakland Police Department in California.
The rapper subsequently filed a lawsuit against the police department in relation to the incident, which was eventually settled.
"After he was in Northern California with the police officers that beat him up, he started losing his hair. And his alopecia patterns were far more extreme than mine," Smith stated.
"I don’t think Pac ever talked about his alopecia, but he also looked really good with a bald head," she went on. "But that was during a time and during an era that you wouldn’t — he just wouldn’t talk about it."
However, Pinkett Smith further stated that she believes if Shakur were still alive today, she is "certain" he would likely open up about his diagnosis.
