An exoplanet more than eight times the size of Earth and potentially habitable has been discovered by scientists. Exoplanet K2-18 b was detected by NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope and piqued scientists’ interest after data suggested it may be covered in an ocean and have a hydrogen-rich atmosphere that could support life. Scientists are also encouraged by a hint of the detection of the molecule dimethyl sulphide (DMS). On Earth, DMS is only produced by microbial life, but the team has yet to confirm the detection and search for evidence of biological activity. The groundbreaking discovery of K2-18 b may see the exoplanet come under the unique classification of a “Hycean” planet – ones which are candidates for life thanks to their hydrogen-rich atmospheres and water cover. The amount of methane and carbon dioxide combined with the shortage of ammonia suggests there may be a water ocean underneath a hydrogen-rich atmosphere in K2-18 b. K2-18 b lies within the constellation of Leo and orbits a dwarf star called K2-18. It lies around 120 light years away from Earth and is within the habitable zone. However, scientists added that this does not necessarily mean it can support life. Nikku Madhusudhan, an astronomer at the University of Cambridge and lead author of the paper, explained: “Our findings underscore the importance of considering diverse habitable environments in the search for life elsewhere. “Traditionally, the search for life on exoplanets has focused primarily on smaller rocky planets, but the larger Hycean worlds are significantly more conducive to atmospheric observations.” Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Have your say in our news democracy. The manhunt for convicted killer Danelo Cavalcante has now widened and local schools have been shuttered after he was spotted on trail camera footage breaking past a police parimeter on Monday night. Cavalcante, 34, escaped from Chester County Prison, Pennsylvania, on Thursday days after he was sentenced to life without parole for stabbing his ex-girlfriend Deborah Brandão, 31, to death in front of her two small children. He is also wanted for a 2017 murder in Brazil. During the six-day search for the escaped prisoner, multiple sightings have been reported with law enforcement setting up a two-mile parimeter around a wooded area where he was believed to be holed up. On Monday, officials then broadcast a message from the killer’s mother urging her son to surrender. But, in a morning update on Tuesday, police revealed that Cavalcante had been caught on camera managing to sneak past the parimeter the night before. As a result, police have now expanded the police parimeter and shuttered the Kennett Consolidated School District in Chester Count “out of abundance of caution”. Aardman Animations - the studio behind Chicken Run and Wallace and Gromit - is running out of clay. According to The Telegraph, Newclay Products, the factory that produces the specific clay used by the studio shut down in March. Now the studio only has enough clay for one more film. The specific clay, called 'Lewis Newplast' has been used by Aardman since the early 1970s, and despite buying all of the factories remaining stock, it's not enough for the studio to keep producing the films we love. Valerie Dearing, one of the directors of Newclay Products, said: "Aardman bought a lot of our remaining stock of Newplast to keep them going. They got what they said was two years' worth. It came to about 40 boxes, which must have been around 400kg." The reason for the factory's closing is the retirement of its directors. Paul Dearing explained "we ran the business for 16 years and it was thriving, but we couldn't find anyone who wanted to take over the firm after we retired so we sold off everything." However the Dearings were proud of their company's legacy. "To look back and think that all those wonderful character they created were made without clay and that our company was such a key part of the artistic process, we're very proud of it," Paul said. Thankfully this didn't interrupt the creation of their latest film, Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nuggets, which is released on Netflix on December 15. Now, Aardman is on the hunt for a replacement clay that can sustain hot studio lights whilst being malleable enough to create the studio's iconic characters.
