Brownsvillepolice have identified the driver in a fatal car crash that left eight people dead outside a migrant centre in Texas. Chief Felix Sauceda identified the driver as George Alvarez, 34. Mr Sauceda said Mr Alvarez lost control of his SUV while running a red light. The SUV then rolled onto its side and slammed into a group of people outside a migrant centre. Police found six people dead when they arrived and another 12 that were in need of critical care. The death toll later rose to eight. Mr Alvarez allegedly tried to flee the scene of the accident, but was held down by bystanders, according to the chief. Reporters asked Mr Sauceda if police had ruled out the collision being an intentional act on the part of Mr Alvarez. Mr Sauceda said that police were still in the midst of an investigation and had not ruled anything out at the time of the press conference. Earlier reports suggested Mr Alvarez was allegedly "very uncooperative" with the investigation. Weeks before the attack, thousands of migrants — many from Venezuela — arrived in the city, prompting a state of emergency. No threats of violence were made to the migrant centre where the crash occurred, according to Sister Norma Pimentel, the executive director of Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley. Popular YouTube star MrBeast recently announced he will be sharing an incredibly old video in two years' time. Back in 2015, Jimmy ‘MrBeast’ Donaldson created a three-minute clip addressed to his future self. At the time of recording, the internet star was believed to have had around 8,000 subscribers. "When I had a few thousand subscribers I made a video predicting how many subscribers I'd have in 10 years and schedule [sic] it to manually go public in 10 years,” he wrote on X/Twitter, along with a screenshot of the video titled, “Hi Me in 10 Years”. Excited fans soon flooded the announcement, with one writing: “Hey Siri, set reminder for MrBeast’s Hi Me in 10 years video.” Another added: “If only your younger self knew where you would be today…” “Hard work and dedication for the win,” one X user said. Meanwhile, a third humoured: “I’m gonna make a video predicting what you predicted in the video you made but not release it until 10 years from now” It comes after the YouTuber spoke out against deepfakes when his face fronted an AI scam. A clip recently surfaced on social media which showed MrBeast “giving away iPhones”. "You’re one of the 10,000 lucky people who will get an iPhone 15 pro for just $2," the AI version of MrBeast said in the clip. "I’m MrBeast and I am doing the world’s largest iPhone 15 giveaway." The clip then encouraged viewers to follow a link to "claim yours now!" The 25-year-old warned followers to not buy into it. "Lots of people are getting this deepfake scam ad of me… are social media platforms ready to handle the rise of AI deepfakes? This is a serious problem," he wrote on social media. The South Carolina Senate on Tuesday passed a six-week abortion ban despite the fact that every woman senator in the chamber, Republican and Democrat, voted against it. The abortion ban will now go to the desk of Gov Henry McMaster, a Republican. If Mr McMaster does sign the bill as expected, it will be another blow to people seeking abortion care in the southeast. Nearly every other state in the region has enacted abortion bans since the fall of Roe v Wade last year. If Mr McMaster signs the ban into law, it is likely to face a legal challenge. The South Carolina Supreme Court earlier this struck down a previous version of a six-week abortion ban as unconstitutional. But that didn’t stop Republican men in the state legislature and the male Republican governor from pushing to pass a ban anyway. Six-week bans on abortion are considered near total bans because many people don’t know they’re pregnant until more than six weeks after conception. This bill may make it hard for people to get legal abortion care in the state even if they do know they’re pregnant before six weeks are up. The bill requires people to have two in-person doctors’ visits and two ultrasounds before they can get an abortion. Many Republican-controlled states have passed severely restrictive abortion bans over the past year-plus. But the optics in South Carolina, a state Donald Trump carried by just over 11 points in the 2020 election, are striking. The five women in the South Carolina Senate all united in opposition to the bill, calling themselves the “Sister Senators.” On two previous occassions, they and several male Republican senators had united to block the Senate from passing an abortion ban sent to them by the state House. This time, however, those male Republican senators relented and voted for the bill — meaning that it passed with only men voting for it. The Republican women senators who opposed the bill, Sens Sandy Senn, Katrina Shealy, and Penry Gustafson, pushed to put the issue to voters in the form of a ballot measure or pass a 12-week ban instead. But they were rebuffed by the more conservative state House and Republican leadership. The New York Times reported that Shane Massey, the Senate majority leader, argued that the state had become “the abortion capital of the Southeast.” If that was ever the case, it likely won’t be for long — and with North Carolina passing an abortion ban of its own in recent weeks, many people in the South will likely be unable to obtain legal abortion care.
