US military advisers invoke lessons of Iraq in urging Israelis to avoid all-out ground assault in Gaza
American military officials are trying to steer Israel away from the type of brutal, urban combat the US engaged in against insurgents during the Iraq War, in an effort to keep the Israelis from getting bogged down in bloody, house-by-house fighting as they prepare for an assault on Gaza, multiple sources familiar with the matter told CNN.

Kaia Gerber shares tongue-in-cheek response after model brother Presley calls sunscreen a ‘myth’
Kaia Gerber has issued some guidance for her elder brother Presley Gerber about taking care of his skin in the sun. Presley, 24, and Kaia, 21, are the children of model Cindy Crawford and Rande Gerber, a businessman. Both siblings followed in their mother’s footsteps and have successful modelling careers, often sharing their work and off-duty looks on social media. On Saturday (19 August), Presley shared photos of himself on a sandy beach while topless. The images show him with a bandana draped around his shoulders. In the caption to the Instagram post, Presley wrote: “Sunscreen’s a myth”. In fact, sun protection provides an essential barrier to harmful UVA and UVB rays. According to the American Cancer Society, UVB rays are responsible for the majority of cases of skin cancer. In disagreement with her brother’s statement, Kaia left a public comment on the post to give him some alternative guidance. “Hi Presley! It’s me, your sister!” she began her message. “Remember me from childhood? We share the same parents [wacky face emoji] I actually wanted to share with you that sunscreen is not a myth!! It is real!! I actually use it myself!!” Fans and followers have jumped in on their exchange, with many leaving laughing emojis at the humorous tone of Kaia’s message. “Absolutely! Sharing is caring @presleygerber!” one fan remarked. “Sis has got your back! You've raised them well @cindycrawford!” Another simply wrote: “Love your brain Kaia!!” Earlier this year, Kaia shared her thoughts on the “nepo baby” debate, which highlights the privilege enjoyed by those in the entertainment and creative industries who have famous parents. Speaking to Elle in January, the model and actor acknowledged the ways that nepotism had helped her career. “I won’t deny the privilege that I have,” she said. “Even if it’s just the fact that I have a really great source of information and someone to give me great advice, that alone I feel very fortunate for.” She also shared a comment that Crawford made about her daughter’s busy modelling career. “My mom always joked, ‘If I could call and book a Chanel campaign, it would be for me and not you,’” Gerber added. “But I also have met amazing people through my mom whom I now get to work with.” Read More Stylist comes to bride-to-be’s rescue after hair is ‘destroyed’ just before wedding Geri Halliwell says she was ‘quite grumpy’ to Christian Horner in their early relationship Prince William criticised for including Charlotte in apology for missing Lionesses final James Blunt claims he changed his age on his Wikipedia page Shirlie Kemp says male doctor told her to ‘get over’ endometriosis Chrissy Teigen posts topless photo to remind fans to get mammograms

'Alien spacecraft' found at the bottom of Pacific Ocean
'Alien spacecraft' found at the bottom of Pacific Ocean
For years people have been looking to the skies for signs of alien life - but maybe, they should have been looking at the bottom of the ocean this whole time. A Harvard physicist has claimed that parts of an alien 'spacecraft' could have been uncovered under the sea. Professor Avi Loeb set off on a search along the bottom of the Pacific Ocean and found 50 iron pieces which originated from the IM1 meteor. IM1 crashed off the coast of Papua New Guinea and Leob believes it could contain key information in the search for life out there in the universe, saying he hasn’t discounted the idea of the pieces being evidence of a “spacecraft” from an “extraterrestrial technological civilization” which crashlanded on Earth. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Loeb is currently the head of Harvard’s Galileo Project, focusing on the search for aliens, and he said the fragments they found must have come from “a natural environment different from the solar system, or an extraterrestrial technological civilization.” Speaking to Fox News Digital, Loeb detailed his thoughts on the origins of the meteor fragments by saying: “Given IM1's high speed and anomalous material strength, its source must have been a natural environment different from the solar system, or an extraterrestrial technological civilization.” He added that IM1 “is actually tougher and has material strength that is higher than all the space rocks that were catalogued by NASA. That makes it quite unusual.” Have your say in our news democracy. Click the upvote icon at the top of the page to help raise this article through the indy100 rankings.

Federal funds will pay to send Iowa troops to the US-Mexico border, governor says
Federal funds will pay to send Iowa troops to the US-Mexico border, governor says
About a hundred Iowa National Guard troops will be sent to the U.S.-Mexico border for the month of August in a federally funded operation, Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds announced Wednesday. The move reflects a broader trend across the country of Republican governors joining forces with Texas Gov. Greg Abbott to counter President Joe Biden's immigration policies, which they say have created a crisis at the border. “Since the administration refuses to invest in securing the border and protecting its citizens, Texas has asked other states to help, and Iowa is ready and willing to assist," Reynolds said in a statement. The Biden administration sent 1,500 active-duty troops for a 90-day deployment in May, amid concerns that the end of asylum restrictions linked to the pandemic would lead to an increase in illegal border crossings. Even when the restrictions were in place, a record number of people were crossing the border. Instead, numbers have fallen, and 1,100 troops will conclude their 90-day mission by Aug. 8, a defense official said on the condition of anonymity in order to discuss details ahead of an announcement. The remaining 400 will be extended through August 31. An additional 2,300 National Guard troops remain at the border under federal orders. This is the third time since 2020 that Reynolds is sending troops to the country’s southern border. Officers with the state’s Department of Public Safety will follow National Guard troops at the end of August for the month of September. The governor’s office indicated in May, when the deployment was first announced, that about 30 public safety officers would be sent. Iowa's neighbor, Nebraska, will also dispatch about 60 troops to the southern border in August, Republican Gov. Jim Pillen announced Monday. Governors in Florida, Virginia and South Carolina, among other states, have made similar deployments for Operation Lone Star, a multibillion dollar operation that is distinct from federal efforts, and whose lack of transparency and metrics have drawn questions. ___ Associated Press writers Tara Copp and Rebecca Santana contributed to this story from Washington.
