NORWALK, OHIO: Laura Ilg, a 31-year-old pregnant woman from Norwalk, Ohio, died earlier this month along with her unborn baby after her two-year-old son accidentally shot her in the back. Reports suggest that the toddler found a pistol in Ilg’s nightstand and ended up firing an unintentional gunshot towards her.
Police officers reportedly rushed to the scene on June 16 after Ilg called 911 moments after being shot. Her husband, Alek, also contacted dispatchers and partly informed them about an emergency situation at home. He said that he received a call from Ilg and heard her screaming about their son and 911, as per the Daily Mail. Ilg was immediately taken to the nearby Fisher-Titus Medical Center but died from the gunshot wounds.
What is known about Alek Ilg?
Ilg’s husband, Alek, 28, is a marine officer by profession. He was reportedly at work when his two-year-old accidentally shot his pregnant wife at their home. Authorities said that Alek called dispatchers to respond to the emergency at his residence and said that he “received a phone call from his wife, ‘screaming something about my son and needing to call 911.’”
In the wake of Ilg’s and her unborn child’s sudden and accidental death, Alek took to social media to share a heartwrenching tribute to his wife. “There are no words for the pain and loss I feel. She was, is, and will always be, the love of my life.” Officials revealed that the firearm used in the accidental shooting belonged to Alex and was mostly kept in a nightstand next to the couple’s bed.
Reports suggest that the two-year-old is still with Alek amid ongoing investigation about how the toddler managed to pull the trigger on the firearm. No charges related to the case have been filed at the time of writing.

As per an online obituary Laura “enjoyed attending her church and spending time with her family.” The tribute mentioned that she first met Alek while he was in the marines and the couple tied the knot on November 23, 2018. “She always wanted to be a mother and wife... She was an avid reader and especially liked Harry Potter, crafting, and enjoyed board games and was a child at heart,” the obituary added.
After being rushed to the hospital, surgeons reportedly performed an emergency cesarean section on Ilg but could not save her baby, Police Chief Dave Smith told local press. The woman died nearly three hours after the death of her baby, the officer confirmed.
